A few months ago a friend who suffers from ADHD was explaining to me her frustration trying to get anything accomplished in the course of a day. Like many women she juggles 2 young children, a husband and a job. At the same time as this conversation I was beginning to explore and review executive functioning apps so I told her, in all seriousness, “there’s an app for that”. Executive Function apps are apps that help a person with tasks such as, remembering, organization, planning, and time management. With the help of multiple people, I’ve spent the last few months exploring Executive Functioning apps and creating a spreadsheet to compile this information. Through out this process I’ve explored a multitude of apps – some good, some not so much. I’ve also explored apps for adults as well as children. The sooner we can help children to organize their tasks and their assignments the better off they will be as they juggle all the different expectations put on them. One of my favorite apps for organizing my own time is Any.Do. The app is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play for FREE. It is also available as a Chrome Extension for FREE. I use this app as a simple checklist of things I need to accomplish Today, Tomorrow, Upcoming and Someday. I can set a reminder with an alarm or I can send a reminder to someone via email. This app is so simple to use, I can either type in my tasks or tap the microphone and speak the tasks. Any.Do converts my voice to text and lists the tasks where it is needed. I also have the app set to send me a reminder every morning to open the app. By opening the app it automatically brings me to the current day with my list of things to do. If I don’t get something done one day, the task is automatically updates to the current day. Spending 30 seconds each morning gets my day off on the right foot.
Stay tuned for more information on the executive function app project I’ve been working on. I hope to bring all the app reviews online soon. If you are in need of suggestions of apps to help you personally please feel free to contact me. I’d be happy to create a personalized list of apps to meet your needs. If you prefer, I’ll be presenting Apps to Supplement Executive Functioning at ATech Services in Concord, NH on May 13, 2014. For now, I need to open Any.Do and plan my day. How much will you get done today?
